Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE or lupus) is a chronic autoimmune disease that can be fatal, though with recent medical advances, fatalities are becoming increasingly rare. As with other autoimmune diseases, the immune system attacks the body’s cells and tissue, resulting in inflammation and tissue damage. SLE can affect any part of the body, but most often harms the heart, joints, skin, lungs, blood vessels, liver, kidneys and nervous system. The course of the disease is unpredictable, with periods of illness (called flares) alternating with remission. Lupus can occur at any age, and is most common in women, particularly of non-European descent. Lupus is treatable symptomatically, mainly with corticosteroids and immunosuppressants, though there is currently no cure. However, many people with Lupus lead long and substantial lives.
-From Wikipedia.org My reasons for making this stamp is for my eldest sister, Stephanie, who was diagnosed with Lupus almost five years ago during the birth of her first child. It terrifies me not knowing how much time she has left, or what's going on with her, as some of her symptoms can get pretty bad, from swelling, to sore joints and whatnot. So here is me, spreading Lupus awareness on deviantART. |

If your parents both have the recessive gene for it [like mine did]
than the chance of you having it would be increased [as it is for my sisters and myself]
Seeing as how my eldest sister has Lupus, and my other one has Fibromyalgia
Which is associated with lupus.

Her's get so bad that she throws up and has to sit in pitch black rooms
Due to her sensitvity to light.
The other, well, she's doing okay I suppose. Her lupus with the cold weather
out by me isn't a good combination, and causes her to ache and whatnot.
